North Fork Arts Council members tour Old Town, which they are hoping to turn into an arts and crafts community.
The North Fork Arts Council (NFAC) was founded by a small group of artists and art supporters in 2001.
Its stated mission is to promote visual and performing arts and education in carving, drawing, music, painting, photography, sculpture and theater, as well as all crafts, throughout the mountain area. The organization's present officers are Paul Henry Abram - President, Rosemary Curry - Vice President, Phyllis Overstreet - Secretary, Lloyd Crocket - Treasurer, and Dot Morris - Membership. The NFAC has recently achieved tax-exempt status and all future contributions to the NFAC will be tax deductible.
The NFAC is now focusing on three major projects: (1) The purchase of Old Town and the creation of a multi-organization, multi-purpose facility to house an arts and crafts community, restaurant, performance arena and theater, movie shoot location, art and craft renaissance-type faires, and just an all-around fun place to spend time. It is a collaborative effort and anyone wishing to join in should contact the NFAC. (2) Helping with the creation of "The Art Center" at the new Minarets High School - groundbreaking is scheduled for this Fall. (3) Cooperating with the Murals Society on a "Murals Project", with the financial help of the CDC, for the purpose of the further beautification of North Fork by tracing the history of it peoples and development from early times to the present - and into a projected future. The CDC has not only offered $1000 towards paint and supplies, they have dedicated the outer walls of the old grease building and tire shed as a starting place for the murals.
